If you're happy with Kaspersky, renew it- now!
You didn't give me any information about what system problems you're having- just that the AV found entries. It's possible that you may not be able to install a new AV, depnding on what the malware is.
========================================
I'd like to see what this shows:

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  5. Click Start
  6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  7. Click Scan
  8. Wait for the scan to finish
  9. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  10. A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

This didn't appear to be posting, so, I hope this didn't post multiple times...

My main concern was the large number of detections that I had, and they did not appear to be removed by the AV. It even used the term "infection" on the report view next to many of them. So, I wanted to ensure they computer was clean. We lost a computer due to virus before (I came here for help, but couldn't be fixed) and didn't want that to happen again.

However there are a couple other things that are a bit off. I have seen a small window ~ 3"x1" randomly flash in the top left of the screen. At the same time, the desktops icons flash back and forth from a "generic" looking icon to the regular icon. This seems to happen when loading, transferring programs, and uninstalling programs. It just happened as I was uninstalling the AV and loading my new AV, and transferring the files from my flash drive.

Thanks for your help!!

ESET scan appears to be clean...this is all that is in the log:

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

-----------------

I have a second computer which the AV also expired; they shared a multi-computer license. When I repurchased the license and tried to load it on that computer, it would not load. The popup from the new AV I was trying to load suggested the computer may be infected and said I should load and use their avptool to scan and neutralize any threats. I tried to do so, but the automatic load failed. It then suggested I download and run the avptool manually. It too failed when trying to load. Sounds a bit like what you describe in your response below.

So, I would like to have it looked at by you as well. Since I had to remove the old AV to load the new, that computer is without any AV protection. I am currently doing the 6/8 steps. I am assuming you want this in a different thread, is that correct? Thanks.

Yes, please- new thread for the other computer.

Did you disable the AV when you ran the Eset scan? There should be a log whether it finds malware or not. You can try this online virus program instead:
Run Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
[o] Scan using the following Anti-Virus database> Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
[o] Scan Options: Scan Archives> Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    [o] Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
==================================================
The 'blinking' you describe sometimes is alerting you to another Windows open behind the active Windows you're looking at. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But the only to determine is try to find any info on it. Right click> Properties might work. Since you notice this when actively trying to move a program, it's possible that you are being alerted to do some function in the process.

You need some kind of AV protection. When changing AV programs, the new one should be downloaded and saved to the desktop. Then you should boot into Safe Mode to uninstall the AV you aren't going to keep, then run the new one.

Removing the AV without replacing it is similar to a suicide mission in the malware war!!
===========================================
Download Combofix to your desktop from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Query- Recovery Console image
    RcAuto1.gif

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please paste that log in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi Bobbye-

I've been working with Broni on my 2nd computer. It too had to use the Eset scan and was "clean" with no log. Not to pit you guys against each other, but in his instructions he noted "If Eset won't find any threats, it won't produce any log." When I ran the Eset scan this morning I did have my AV turned off.

I tried to run the Kaspersky online scanner and received the following notice:

“Message from webpage: The program could not be started. The program count not be started. Please close the window of Kasperky Online Scanner 7.0 and start the program again from the web site of Kaspersky Lab.

[Error: java.lang.RuntimeException: Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 cannot be started because this computer has Kaspersky Internet Security 8.0 (9.0) installed.]”

I do have Kaspersky internet security 2011 (11.0.1.400) loaded on this computer. But thought I successfully uninstalled the prior version (2010.) I double checked the programs and features and didn't see any other version in the listing.

Below is my log from the ComboFix scan:

Thank you for the help!!!

In all fairness, I push for the log and about 70% of the time, I get one. Some people just copy the top and not the actual scan section. Eset does generate a log even if there is nothing found some of the time. I have seen the logs. But I have also seen members who ran it with no log. One thought was that it would not produce a log if you AV was running in the background. I don't know if that is valid or why a clean scan sometimes has a log and other times not.

The system looks good. I would recommend uninstalling LimeWire

Are there any remaining problems? I'll have you run this scan to mak sure there are no bad entries left:
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

BTW, Broni is much smarter than I am, but see this:

Hi - I ran HijackThis and got the below message. Also below is a copy of the log.

I have not had any more symptoms. If you think the blinking is normal and the system is clean, that's great! For some reason I could not determine if my AV was actually removing the malware as it was detecting them; I could not see an option for me to take action (i.e., permission to move to quarantine or remove.) I am more comfortable about that now.

Thanks!

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as ‘hosts’ (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose ‘Run as administrator.’"

About the blinking: I don't have enough information to tell you if it's okay. Can you take a screen shot of the "small window ~ 3"x1" randomly flash in the top left of the screen."? IT sounds like your attention is being directed there for something involved in the transfers.

As for the antivirus quarantines: You should not have to 'tell' the AV program to quarantine malware entries! If it's not doing it, it's not working. As for the high number: I can't address that unless I know what the entries are and where they are located. For instance, there may be 10 entries showing in System Volume. The AV program will show that, but they aren't active in the system. They are in the restore points that we have you drop t the end of cleaning.

The HijackThis log if fine. The only entry I take issue with is:
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
P2P or 'file sharing' Warning:
Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. I suggest that you uninstall LimeWire for the following reasons:
  • As long as you are using file sharing networks and programs which are from sources that are not documented, you cannot verity that a download is legitimate.
  • Malware writers use these program to include malicious content.
  • File sharing is usually unmonitored and there is a danger that your private files might be accessed.
  • The 'sharing' also includes malware that the shared system has on it.
  • Files that are illegal can be spread through file sharing.

Please read the information on P2P Warning to help you better understand these dangers.

When you unzipped the HJT file, it should have been the executable, which is you need on Windows 7.

  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
