Please help! How do you split an internet connection after a router?

I live in an appartment building. My internet connection is an ethernet cable that comes into my room from I believe a router in the hallway. I tried setting up another router in my room but could not access the internet. Does anyone know how I can split the internet so I can have 2 computers online at the same time? Please help me.

You will need to set your router up as a hub only, with no DHCP setup. If you are assigning DHCP, and so is the apartment complex, then you will have issues.
