Power supply upgrade

To be honest I wouldn't go for the E6500 upgrade route...
There are plenty of cheap AMD or Intel i3 processors out there - sure you need to get a new motherboard but I think it's better than spending money on an outdated 775 socket CPU and DDR2 RAM. I'm sure you could get a much better and future-proofed system with your $700 budget that way.

There is some useful information [here] and [here]

No its not, thats asking for a way higher budget, considering that he only has a 9600gso and that games rely (amazingly) on the graphics card, its far more useful to spend money on a good card. The only reason i'd suggest upgrading the cpu is because that old 1.8ghz celeron would hold back most graphics cards. Not only that there isn't a huge difference in performance.
At the same time, it wouldn't be a bad option, just much more expensive. 'Futureproofing' is always costly imo. What are different graphics settings for anyway? A decent card and processor would last plenty long. Also I believe those involve the oudated E6600's and not the new ones (though it doesn't really say...).

1a. would these fit right in my case and could my pc handle these items?
Yes, though you may want to measure you're case size to see how big a graphics card you could fit.

Okay when buying and installing a new power supply you do not want to put tooo much bigger of one in because it will fry the pc so becareful wha voltages and stuff you put in.

Not really... he's changing the processor, RAM and power supply anyway so getting a new motherboard isn't that drastic - you can get AM3 boards for about £50/$70. While an E6500 may suffice now I don't think it will be better value in the long run.

Anyway $700 is quite a bit to play with and in any case you really should be thinking about selling the 9600 GSO and getting a 5770 or something.

I think the OP mentioned that he can't spend that much.

Taking into consideration his present system and his budget, I think HK's suggestions are pretty sensible. However, if the OP could wait till he has more cash he could get a better system.

I'm sorry that makes no sense; almost all powersupplies are ATX and therefore will fit interchangeably. Bigger powersupplies do not mean they are stronger (again their all the same size anyway.). All voltages are 12v rails and a couple 5v and 3v (they do not fit, no worries about that) standard, only a poorly manufacture would fluctuate enough to cause damage and corsair's are top quality.

so, if I get a CPU and PSU, and memory, will I be able to use the GSO until I can get a better card?

selling it could take time, and returning it will take alot of time...

I am going to have to use it for another few weeks....
I can spend 200 this week.. what should it go towards if I want to stop lagging now?

ok i bought the corsair vx450w and 2 gigs of RAM. when I installed the two on my elitegroup945gct -m3 I got the emachines logo on my monitor. then a no signal RGB screen. I am currently running the corsair450 an evga 9600gso, 2 gigs of ram, vindows vista home premium 32 bit. I connected the hard drive the 24 pin plug and a 4 pin plug to my motherboard. I also connected my dvd burner. does anyone know why this would be happening? I called corsair and they told me two remove my motherboard battery to reset it. I did that and i'm still not able to boot up. I do get 1 short beep on startup like usual.

thanks, jim.

Go back to you're old RAM, obviously if you added the powersupply and the RAM and stopped working, its either the RAM or the powersupply. Much more likely to be the RAM.

Make sure you connected the hard drive to the power supply, and the hard drive to the motherboard. Also make sure you installed the RAM correctly, you have to press it in very firmly until you hear a click.

lawl im such a *****.... I connected my monitor to the usual spot, not realizing that the video card now has the monitor connection. Everything is working, really well I must say..Now I gotta get a faster cpu and an additional hard drive. Thanks for everyones help, I really appreciate it.
