Problem with E drive

When I am burning a disc on the computer as soon as I insert a blank one into the E drive it shuts down my whole computer. And the message a fatal error has occured. Is it my burner or my computer? And btw never did get Yahoo Messenger to show display pic and I tried everyone's suggestions. Now it is this strange thing with the disc when inserted. If I didn't have so much money invested would toss it out.
