Problems after XP Boots

My parents have a computer they gave me to see if I can fix it. I can usually find a lot of information and fix these problems, but this one is just giving me a hard time.

They're running Windows XP Home Edition and when I boot the computer up, everything seems normal. I get to the login screen, select my user, and the desktop comes up like normal. Then it seems to go into Standby Mode. Nothing I do can bring it back. The screen just goes blank.

Any ideas would be appreciated before I just try to wipe everything out and reload windows.

Then if that doesn't work, format your HD and do a clean install of windows.
