Problems upgrading bios on ispiron 5100

Originally my laptop is running with 384mb ram memory.I purchased 1 chip 1gb from the same type but it won't detect it.I remove the old ones and install the new memory.It starts and the shuts down after few seconds without being able to load even bios
Please help.

The specs for the Dell insiron 5100 say that maximum ram is 1 GB. however this does not necessairlly mean that you can use a single 1Gb stick. it may be that your laptop has to have TWO 512 sticks to run at 1 Gb of ram. I would suggest checking your dell handbook or going to the dell site to see how large of a single stick of ram the laptop can use.
