Problems With Memory Installation

CPU 3 GHZ PRESCOTT
INSTALLED MEMORY KINGSTON KVR400X64C3A/512

INTO DIMM SLOT 1

purchased a stick of memory today KINGSTON KVR400X64C3A/512
tried installing into DIMM SLOT 2 and all i get is a black screen
installing it into DIMM SLOT 3 the system picks up the memory, loads windows then resets to a black screen
please help cause i dont know where to go from here.

Perhaps You Are Using The Wrong Type Of Memory.
Your Motherboard Will Accept Pc 3200 Ddr Ram Only. Do Not Use Pc 2100 Or Pc2700 Or Any Other Type Of Ddr Ram
 
If the original stick was the same as the new one, it looks like the second stick is faulty. You should have lifelong guarantee on it, so return it for a replacement.
You can go to www.memtest86.org and download memtest86.
Install on a floppy, boot from it and let it run a few cycles. Repeat for each stick in each slot, individually and both together.
DDR400 = PC3200.
Try either both green or both blue slots together. Check your manual for dual channel.
For DDR400/PC3200 to work at its best, the frontbusspeed FSB should be set to 800MHz.
