programs starting up two or more times

Hi,
I am new to this and hope this is where I can find answers to windows issues I have. When I double click most file types in windows explorer, the associated program starts up as would expect. When I double click another of the same file type, the program starts again. The more I click the same file types, the more times the program starts. This happens when I double click .jpegs, .docs but not .xls. It is just annoying to me.

It really depends on the application that is opening the file and the type of file you're opening. Some apps are smart and won't invoke another instance if one is already running. Some launch a new instance of the app.
