simple question: is there any negative effects to using a higher wattage PSU than your hardware requires? Wondering if i could run a 500w system on a 1Kw PSU just until my new system comes without it melting or something?

No there are no negatives. The PSU only provides the amount of power the PC needs, nothing more. So using a 800W or 1kW PSU will not cause your components to melt.
