In the fast-paced world of technology, things can change at the drop of a hat. Such appears to be the case with Qualcomm, a company that was cruising along in the smartphone industry until word got out that there might be some overheating concerns with its new Snapdragon 810 SoC.
Last week, a rumor surfaced claiming Samsung has decided not to use the chip in its next flagship, the Galaxy S6. Now, Qualcomm has revealed that its chip has indeed been dropped by a large customer although the company stopped short of naming names.
Given last week’s rumors, the obvious assumption is that it’s Samsung.
Reports of a hot-running Snapdragon 810 aren’t new but that hasn’t stopped a couple of companies from recruiting Qualcomm’s latest. The LG G Flex 2, announced earlier this month at CES, will feature the octa-core chip clocked at 2.0GHz.
HTC is also rumored to be using the Snapdragon 810 in its upcoming M9. That handset, which is also said to include a 20-megapixel rear camera, is expected to debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona during the first week of March.
Qualcomm’s admission came as part of its quarterly earnings report. With a big customer now out of the picture, it should come as little surprise that the company has lowered its outlook for the second half of 2015. Qualcomm also listed heightened competition in China as another contributing factor.
