Is a router with 11 mbps faster than one with 56mbps? I have sypatico with 100 mbps speed and im trying to find a router that will allow for high speed transfers. does router speed make a difference, does download and upload speed all rely on how fast my sympatico is?

No. The router normally allows the full speed from your ISP-provider (which is hardly ever more than 2MB anyway). So any router would do for that matter.
The switch-part of the router allows traffic between PCs on that netweork. That is limited only by the Switch-speed (either 10MB or 100MB) and/or the PC's NIC speed, also normally 10/100MB. Some more expensive routers allow network-speeds of 1GB, provided all the PC-NICs are also 1GB.
