Radeon RX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 1060: 27 Game Battle

Testing with a more realistic $200 or less CPU would cut the 1060 wins.
The nVidia drivers push the CPU to 90-100% so in a real world case the 1060 could be held back in some games.

Testing with a Ryzen under $200 CPU would be of interest also.
others have tested this before, but I can't find the benchmarks anymore. the difference is too small to matter, especially after the relive drivers from AMD.

AMD deserves more attention. They strive to put out competitive products, even though they are a smaller company compared to nvidia. Also, the 8GB memory buffer of RX580 might prove beneficial in a few years time because as the trend goes, the required video memory size will likely increase.

Great review! Would have liked to see some numbers for Ryzen though (if there is any difference. Ryzen 5 especially because of the price range)

Wanted the 1060 before buying the RX480 but the 480 proved to be a better choice because even @ 1200p I have titles that consume 5GB+ Vram with all the candy on.

Some of you Nvidia fanboys better take your green glasses off and hope and pray that AMD stays in the game and brings the heat with Vega. The last thing that we need to see from Nvidia is Intel-level laziness and complacency due to lack of competition. It's been a tough week for AMD stock - will the impending Vega release be just what the doctor ordered?

Come on AMD, we believe in you.

- Nvidia GTX 1070 Owner

Except the difference between a GPU and a CPU, is game engines react favourably to GPU cores and clock speeds a lot more than CPU's, and nVIDIA knows this. As for the classic monopoly talk, nVIDIA has been trouncing AMD for YEARS, and just recently nVIDIA threw out the GTX 970 for $349 with the performance of a $599 card. After that, they raised the bar again with Pascal performance that somehow, people still find things to complain about.

Your comment would have made more sense if none of the above happened and we were getting the performance difference of an RX 480 to an RX 580, but we're not. nVIDIA is firing on all cylinders with no signs of stopping.

Bottom line is when AMD is doing bad, it's nVIDIA's fault, and when AMD is doing good, nVIDIA's head is called for. What we have IS competition in the GPU space, it's just AMD that isn't able to keep up.

The only thing people could complain about Pascal is that, even after multiple promises by Nvidia since Maxwel, they still didn't add proper async compute to their GPUs. There is nothing else to complain about and nobody is doing it (with the exception of the old ones like Nvidia ignoring open source technologies and rumors of foul play)

I'm not sure how my comment failed to make sense to you. I said: "The last thing that we need to see from Nvidia is Intel-level laziness and complacency due to lack of competition.". I didn't say that's what we ARE seeing. Did you lose your sh** in my first sentence when I called out Nvidia fanboys? Without a doubt, Nvidia's been pumping out products with significant improvements over the previous generation, unlike Intel........ but I would expect the same thing from Nvidia if AMD ceased to exist. If you think that Nvidia (or any corporation) is beyond that, I feel sorry for you.

GTX970, hehe. Nvidia promised future proof card with 4 GB memory. They delivered 3.5GB card with no promised technologies, like async compute. Nvidia fanboys never learn.

Yeah.... It's such a terrible card that it's smoking its AMD competition and is the best selling video card.... I smell an AMD fanboy....

"The last thing that we need to see from Nvidia is Intel-level laziness and complacency due to lack of competition."

Same could be said about AMD. I'm not seeing the reason for your comment other than an attempt to make nVIDIA look bad with nothing to back it up.

So, the 1060 wins across the board, value, temps, performance, power consumption. But you recommend the 580 because you guys prefer freesync to gsync?

What happened to this website?
The Rx 580 actually provided superior performance. Plus if I remember correctly Nvidia GPU's do not age well.

What is the point of nvidia's newer gtx 1060 variant which has minimal advantage over the older gtx 1060?

It was best selling and that just proves Nvidia fanboys never learn.
lol... no... it proves Nvidia is a much more successful company than AMD... But hopefully AMD's new cards will compete with them and give us some options - and drive prices down a bit.

Did you hear that from Hardreset? He'll tell you that a 480 will out-perform the 1080 in 2 years... But in REALITY, mid/low-level AMD cards age no better than Nvidia cards... and the high end cards alas, are non-existent nowadays.

No, the statement I am making is based off my own experience.

As a proud owner of both the gtx780ti and radeon r9 290x, I noticed how badly the radeon card outperforms the geforce card nowadays. Don't even get me started on Doom and DeusEX Mandkind divided, It's just terrible to see how the gtx780ti has lost its advantage in older and newer titles alike.

When the geforce gtx 780ti was released, it held the performance advantage over the r9 290x at nearly 10%. The factory overclocked models increased this advantage to nearly 20%. At launch it was amazing how powerful the geforce card was. There was hardly a single game where the radeon could win. Upon release of the gtx970, the gtx 780ti was still faster albeit slightly. The gtx970 vs r9-290 became a fair battle as those 2 cards were even. As newer games were released nvidia want to not only optimize performance for there newer cards, but they also wanted to push sales as well. So driver enhancements were made only for the gtx900 series going forward.

If you don't believe me, look at the performance review of every game release between 2016 - 2017. You will see that where the once upon a time GTX780ti > GTX970 > R9-290. Now its more like R9-290 = GTX970 >> GTX780ti.

I anticipate radeon r9-290 pulling ahead of the gtx 970 pretty soon and matching the gtx1060 in performance.

I also remember owning a geforce 7950gtx 512mb and a radeon x1900xt 512mb. The 7950gtx was faster until late 2007 when games heavily utilizing shader technology was released. If you go to the crysis performance review, The geforce 7000 series don't stand a chance. This trend continues to where nvidia releases newer cards and quickly forgets about the last generation.

It is only a matter of time before the geforce gtx 1060 pulls further ahead of the gtx 980 but for now they are fairly even still.

In short the reason why I conclude that Nvidia cards don't age well is because in 2014 the gtx780ti was the faster card. Now in 2017 the r9-290x is the faster card.

If I can say one good thing about Nvidia is that they are quite efficient.

Nice article steve!

Unfortunately only enthusiasts read these. Up to this point the GTX 1060 has outsold the RX 480 5 to 1. When performance is close people will always buy Nvidia because it is the GPU brand that comes to mind first and AMD is thought of as a value brand. You don't buy a value brand for the same price as a premium one.
Not necessarily. RX 480/470 is absurdly popular for crypto mining, as they are hands down best ROI. This wont show up at all in metrics like steam hardware survey. Certain models (ones with fast 8GBPS memory), are harder to find in stock at times for this reason.

Gsync is a scam to lock you into the Nvidia ecosystem. This is proven by the fact that Nvidia refuses to support freesync, even though they it would be extremely easy for them to do so. If they supported Freesync, Gsync would become worthless. Kind of like cable companies hate Netflix and Hulu, yet they all refuse to have a streaming service, and unfairly throttle video.

I wasn't citing Steam as my source. You can look at Nvidia's and AMD's financial numbers and find the official results there. The GTX 1060 is literally outselling the RX 480 by a wide margin.j

Meh...very similar cards... just get the cheaper one... in this case can be either one...

6% difference in FPS?? Hardly noticeable when you're gaming...

I'm always amused by how tech sites choose their favorite cards...
My issues is that they are both the same price where I live and I am completely stumped on which one to go for.

As Steve pointed out in the article, if you ever plan to take advantage of Adaptive Sync you should choose AMD. That tech makes a big difference in game play and you can find FreeSync monitors all over and they don't cost you any extra cash. Companies like LG are integrating FreeSync into nearly every one of their monitors are nearly every korean monitor has it as well.

I don't know much about GPUs.. Bt from this..should I guess that in 2 years .. There will be no conflicts between 580 and 1060? Because the 580 will perform faster !!?

I am really stucked between these two..
I know..steve said none would be a bad choice..

Bt still..I dont want to change 580 in 4 years and wanna run all games in it :(

Asking suggestios please :(

I ended up going with the RX580. Got a great price too. I don't have a need for CUDA anymore, so that sealed the deal. Not an fanboy of either team. I go over benches and compare the value, just like you did in the article here. AMD won out this time around.
