the os was vista when i bought it but i changed it back to xp prof.

when it was vista it used to blue screen with the error paged fault in non paged area or something like that

it crashes even when its not being used. any help would be great.

im a total thicko whwn it comes to computers lol

thanks for reply but ram was the first thing i changed. i have also noticed that sound will not work from the jacks at the back. it works fine from head phones jack. i have re-installed xp now 5 times,,, it helps for a while then starts crashing again.

"sound will not work from the jacks at the back"

This NOT a problem with the OS- so why reinstall?
Don't do a reinstall when you have a specific area of problem> the jacks.

Open the Device Manager, check out those jacks. Look for errors> yellow triangle w/black !.

A reinstall or reformat should be the very last thing considered and then only of nothing else has worked. Doing reinstalls instead of troubleshooting the problem gives no experience in what to do 'the next time'!

its hard to troubleshoot when my pc crashes every few mins and reinstalling the os stops it crashing so often for a while. in device manager i have 2 yellow question marks on other devices and multimedia controller.

I understand your frustration, but finding the underlying cause of these crashes is what needs to be done. Wasting time reinstalling when you know it will crash in hours isn't productive. the problem is not going to magically resolve without the cause being found and fixed.

One other RAM consideration is "The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP." Is it possible that what you had when the machine had Vista is not compatible with Windows XP? I have nothing but the one Event to go by- the Warning can be ignored.

Try doing driver updates on the devices showing the errors. NOTE: it is better to do the update from the manufacturer's site rather than Microsoft. Even if you have you use another computer, check the sites and see if new drivers are available. Then you can download to a flash drive and install on your system.

the problem is that its not every few hours its every few minutes. i think that changin from vista messed something up because xp drivers just dont work properly. i have downloaded drivers from packard bell website for my model but they did not work. i changed both sticks of ram with brand new sticks from pc world... asked the tech guys to get me the right ones... got 1.5 gb of ram. it crashes even when in sleep mode. pc sounds like its always labouring (if u no wat i mean lol) with the fan constantly on. sorry if im not makin any sense but its a weird problem. i cant even install large programs cos it crashes halfway thru installation. thanx for help so far btw
