Random restarts and shutdowns

I know this topic is used a lot, but each have a unique problem; like mine...

My dad's PC can not stay on line for more than 5-15sec at a time. I have ruled out the PSU (I got a new one) and anything that requires drivers. The only thing that is plugged into a mobo is mouse, keyboard, monitor, 1 ram stick (stick is OK I have 2), CPU, and NO HDD (the PC is not on enough to show me "no os found". I have feeling that the CPU is going out. Any thoughts?

How about thinking a bad motherboard? Try resetting the motherboards bios

would taking out the battery do it?

well I did that anyway. I got as far as the desktop, but then the computer started to shut down by itself. and back to square 1. any ideas?

i highly doubt that it is an XP problem. I have taken out the HDD and I did not even get to a screen that says no OS found before the PC restarted again.
