Read/write process memory

I have windows Xp home edition and it wont let me log on about 90% of the time. When I click to log on to immediatly logs off, but when it does log on nothing will open. I cant remember the erroe exacty, because i cant log on but it say something like this. "The read process or write process could not be accessed or read. Anyone have an idea of what to do or what is wrong?

Try a system restore to a date before it started to play up.
