A few weeks ago I picked up a virus and removed it on my own using AVAST and Malwarebytes. However, a few days ago I started getting redirects in my browser. I read the 8 steps yesterday and decided to do it today...grrr...Today the browser does not work. "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections." and IE simply won't load any sites. I can connect to Widows Live Messenger, XFire, and some game servers I frequent. I am rerunning Avast full scan and Malwarebytes full scan as I write this but that will take a few more hours. Afterwards I will try to download the 8 step programs to my laptop and move them using a flashdrive. Hopefully someone will have a better idea before that happens.

I am running HP's version of XP

Malwarebytes and Avast both scanned 100% clean. I don't see any point in posting the reports as they say nothing.

I ran the eight steps. It took a long time. Some notes: I have Adobe Acrobat 9 installed but I use 8 because I have the full version of 8. Also, I couldn't get GMER to work. It would run for an hour and either lock up, not respond, or reboot the system all by itself. I gave up. I have attached the other requested files.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Here is the Combofix log and the Browser is working again now!

Good news :)

Unless you installed Viewpoint Manager knowledgeably...
Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove (Programs and Features in Vista), and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
* Viewpoint Toolbar
This program does not do anything bad such as deliver ads or spy on you, but it is considered foistware ("drive-by-install") as it is installed without your consent through programs like AOl, AIM, Compuserve, etc.

======================================================================

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Code:
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\igwvafxsd
c:\documents and settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\hfxqkhqdm

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

CFScript.gif

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt

Here is the second log. Step 1-4 worked like a charm but I was a bit confused by step 5.

========================================================

Disable your antivirus program.
Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    [*] Archives
    [*] Mail databases
5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

It's late here and this is taking awhile. I'm going to let it run over night and I'll post the report in the morning. Thanks.

Of course Firefoxx decided to crash overnight so I had to restart it in the morning. The scan took 4 and half hours. So here is the report. Should I close Kaspersky?

Yes, you can close Kaspersky.
As you can see from its log, there is some infection in your Outlook mail folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders(1).pst
Since you may have some important mail there, I don't want to delete a whole folder, so you'll have to deal with it. Go through that mail, save what's important and empty that folder.

Now...

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    Code:
    :OTL

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\System Downloads\weatherpulse-setup.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders(1).pst

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
    [resethosts]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • You will get a log that shows the results of the fix. Please post it.

I'm surprised you found that because my Outlook quit working last week. Every-time I try to open it I get an error and then it crashes. I will see if I can access the folder.

If you don't have any important files in that particular folder, we can delete it with OTL. Let me know.

Outlook is still erroring out but it is asking me if I want to reinstall a personal folder from either archive.pst or outlook.pst What should I do?
