Reference memory error

I am attempting to play Team Fortress 2 on my computer, and I have a relatively slow computer. Whenever I try to play the game with DirectX 8.1 or below I get this error:
The instruction at "0x127e5b84" referenced memory at "0x21596d24". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.
This does not happen when I use DirectX 9 but the game runs too slowly when I use DirectX 9. Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

That usually just means that your system or your memory are too slow to give the expected response in the allotted time....
You may have one memory module that is of a slower speed than another.
Using DirectX 8.1 is the likely correct approach, but no joy otherwise.
You will have to budget in a better used computer... or select other games more likely to work on the one you have.
