Reinstalling Windows XP on new HD: "system halted"

  1. I just had my HD replaced, and am trying to reinstall Windows XP. I've got it in my CD drive, turned on the machine, and got the "boot failed: system halted" right away. That's all that appears on the screen. No setup screen or anything.

    I'm using a Dell desktop...

    I've tried holding F8, using the spacebar...nothing.

I can follow directions, know a little bit, but this isn't giving me a chance to even start.

Any advice would be a great help. Would like to get this machine up and running as the kids are starting school again.

Some progress: got through setup, but then removed CD and restarted. Kept prompting me to Ctrl-Alt-Del. Nothing. Tried to run setup again, but this time it said, "No hard drive detected". I know there's one in there - it's brand new.
