I have a Windows XP, and an Ethernet Cable is connected to by a wireless router. It says everything is connected to the Internet, but when I try to go on IE, or Firefox its "Page cannot be found" I try refreshing, and still nothing. Right now I'm on a computer that works ( as why I can post this now) but the other one in a different room doesnt work. I'll post any information as needed. Thanks!!

Hi

1) try swapping out the cable between the PC and the wireless router.

2) go into device manager (start settings control panel system hardware device manager) and see if your network card is listed.

3) if its listed then click start run and type cmd and press enter in the black box type ipconfig and post the details back here. we can see if its getting an address.

4) if 2 shows and error then right click and uninstall the card and reboot and let windows find it again and it should reinstall it,

I wont go any further until you post back with what you have tested so far, then we can go from there.

regards

Should I continue and uninstall it so windows can reinstall it?

Well i tried uninstalling it, and letting windows install it, and the same problem occurs.

those settings are PERFECT (but the DNS addresses are missing, did you not copy them or where they missing???)
-- so reinstall would be a waste of time/effort.

Page not found is one of two issues
  1. a bad url (or one where the site no longer exists)
  2. a bad DNS lookup

please cite the URL that responds "Page Not Found"

try these tests to see if you can resolve URLs into IP addresses correctly.
get a command prompt (run->cmd) and then:
nslookup www.google.com.
(which should return the ip addresses associated with google)
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff>nslookup www.google.com.
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.l.google.com
Addresses: [B]74.125.19.103, 74.125.19.99, 74.125.19.104, 74.125.19.147[/B]
Aliases: www.google.com

then try ping www.google.com
(which should return timing numbers and no timeouts)

hmm; that all looks good except the ping yahoo.com

here is a normal display for ipconfig /all

notice the DNS addresses.
You apparently have the DNS as nslookup shows the dns address which was used as
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Julie>nslookup google.com
Server: cns.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net
[B]Address: 68.87.64.146[/B]
let's see if another dns would help; try this
Code:
nslookup yahoo.com 208.67.222.220
should return
Name: yahoo.com
Addresses: 209.191.93.53, 69.147.114.224, 209.131.36.159

those settings are PERFECT (but the DNS addresses are missing, did you not copy them or where they missing???)
-- so reinstall would be a waste of time/effort.

GREAT! :)
Code:

ok, we'll swap whatever you have for the well knonw OpenDNS.ORG dns addresses
(which by the way I use for myself and they add the protection on not being hijacked :) )

the addresses are:
Code:
208.67.222.222
208.67.222.220

a) login an Admin account
b) find View Network Connections
c) right-click on the Lan Connection->Properties
d) scroll the list to TCP/IP; select and then click the Properties button

in the bottom half; Use the following DNS server addresses
enter the two shown above and click ok; click ok again

use run->cmd to get a command prompt and prove the settings are being used with
ipconfig /all

then ping yahoo.com
three rows with timing data says you're good to go and your browser should
work fine too

I am documenting that there are DIFFERENT ip addresses assigned to these domain names

yahoo.com -> 69.147.114.224
www.yahoo.com -> 209.131.36.158
if you can't use one, try the other :)

oh in these spots "in the bottom half; Use the following DNS server addresses
enter the two shown above and click ok; click ok again" ?
