Roku, the popular streaming device maker, updated its iOS app last month to allow users to push video from their devices and send it directly to Roku hardware. Essentially, it allows those without an Apple TV to send video content directly to a Roku compatible device including the Roku Streaming Stick, Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku HD and Roku LT.
As of now, the company has added the same functionality to its Android app, unfortunately not all Android users will be able to make use of the new feature. Currently, the functionality is available on the Nexus 7 (2012 model), Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, Nexus 4 and the HTC One. At this point it is unclear whether or not the service will roll out on a wider array of Android devices or not.
Video playback requires Android 4.0 or later on a device that is paired with Roku hardware running software version 5.2 or later. Roku recommends an 802.11n WiFi router for the best results.
The iOS version of the Roku app with the new video streaming functionality is currently available in the App Store and on Google Play for select Android users.
Just last month, Roku was named the most popular video media device in the US based on research firm Park Associates' latest study. Later, the company added live events and local news broadcasts through a partnership with live event streaming company Livestream.
