Finnish mobile game developer, publisher and distributor Rovio hit a grand slam in the 9th inning with Angry Birds. The game debuted in late 2009 and quickly climbed the app charts which led the way for a number of high-profile spin-offs spanning multiple platforms, a flurry of lucrative product licensing deals and even an upcoming feature film.

Surprisingly enough, Rovio has yet to put out a true sequel. That’ll change come July 30 when Angry Birds 2 flies onto the scene.

Rovio promises the game will be the “mother of all sequels” but fell short of providing any further details in a blog post announcing the game.

Back in May, Rovio soft-launched a game in Canada called Angry Birds Under Pigstruction. That title, which predictably, pits the Angry Birds against their piggy rivals, features a new bird named Silver. Gamers can collect bird cards that allow them to choose which bird to fling and when. Players can also take advantage of spells that allow the feathered friends to pull off massive damage. The piggies have also upped the ante as they are now capable of building multi-stage levels.

According to some, Angry Birds Under Pigstruction was more or less a public beta for Angry Birds 2.

Despite being downloaded more than three billion times, the popularity of the Angry Birds franchise has waned in recent years. In 2013, the company saw its profits fall by more than 50 percent as freemium titles like Candy Crush saga from King Digital Entertainment and Clash of Clans from Supercell have dominated the mobile gaming industry.

There’s a ton at stake for Rovio with Angry Birds 2 and if the game ultimately falls short of expectations, Rovio could very be headed down the same road as Zynga.

Well, rovio could always sell angry birds franchise to Microsoft. then windows users will have built-in games: freecell and freebirds.
