    My linux machine did not boot to X windows, I discorver the run level set for it was the cause
    After resolving this I gat the Xwindow back
    at log and password entry, the window hung

    What could be the soltn. to this

    What did you get the runlevel to?

    Try changing the X server settings (which you could try to do with Xconfigurator - try invoking this from the command line) so that you use a different X-Server (a graphics card driver like thing).

    Also, try going back to runlevel 3 and just using:

    startx

    to start X Windows, so that you log in using the text console but then invoke X Windows yourself. See if that helps.
