Samsung will reportedly remove the headphone jack and physical home button from the Galaxy S8

I think you may be confused about what on screen buttons are. Unless you've never used android before, you've already used on screen buttons. The 3 buttons at the bottom of your screen on android are on screen buttons.

On screen home buttons if you will. I am not confused, that's what we call them in my area of business UX/UI prototyping.

I have an s7 edge now and all I can say is.....its not worth $700+ lol. the bloatware is immense through verizon (even though I bought an app to disable what I don't need) this phone can't be rooted in an easy way without risking destroying it so I can't utilize its full potential anyways. it only has 4 gigs of ram which isn't enough, whoever says it is apparently doesn't multi task very much. my screen cracked already even though my phone is in an otterbox case so that annoys me and yes I handle it with good care. front camera blows goats. the OS still glitches and runs slower than it should for such a high end device. basically I won't buy samsung again regardless of this removal of the headphone jack. might just have to try a pixel or lgs next flagship or even try oneplus or something. htc can rot for all I care lol.

I've already decided to jump ship from Samsung after the Note 7 fiasco. I'm stuck with a S7 Edge currently because the Pixel XL is always sold out. the S7 Edge isn't necessarily a bad phone, but I've really lost trust with the company and I don't care for the changes they are looking to make with the S8. I just wish Google would be able to keep up their supply to meet the current demand for their phone.

Heheheh... loving all the hate on the "no headphone jack".... And everyone was telling me back a couple months ago that Samsung would never be this stupid.... well, maybe THEY aren't the ones who are being stupid.... When the 2 leading companies do something, maybe they have reasons? Maybe they might be just a bit smarter than uninformed Techspot forum members?

Nah... that's crazy talk....

Your smug attitude and high horse riding tone of writing aside, of course there's reasons why they would do this. Here is the reason for why Apple got rid of the jack and it's not "courage" but instead it's about making maximal profits from the sheeps.

Have you seen whats inside a lightning connector http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...-adapter-finds-mystery-circuit-likely-for-dac

That is where the money goes. Also, this will make sure that only certified cables can be use to charge the phone. Why certified cables? Read this https://www.techspot.com/news/64277-amazon-now-prohibits-sale-usb-type-c-cables.html

For a person who has invested a lot of money in a wired head set of very good quality (I am hearing impaired) I feel that taking away the jack is basically screwing me since I will have to spend time to see what is the best wireless headset and then blow much cash.

In the mean time I will stick with my LG G4, a phone that has the highest sound rating works fast and was a very cheap replacement for my Samsung that fell and died early.

I think what's annoying about this is there wasn't an explicit reason given, its all just conjecture. At least Apple gave a reason as flimsy as it was, this is just like "well APPLE are doing it we have to do it too". They can't get away with it like apple can either, people just had to suck it up if they wanted ios, but with android they can just buy a different brand since they all do basically the same thing. I don't know what they expect to gain by cutting features everyone else has in such a competitive market.

Some people seem to love that feature. I had it on both my SGS4 & HTC 1 M8 and never used it. Most people probably don't, and that's the reason why it's scarce these days. I did use it once though, and that was to turn off a TV in a busy bank that repeatedly played the same commercials over and over again. The staff thought that for a while the TV had broken down because I watched them inspecting and discussing it. The IR blaster was a new feature on phones back then. So yeah, it came in handy then... and amused me.
It saved me from watching soap operas at a hospital.

We don't have those types of problems... simply because our state run hospitals don't have any TV's anymore, they were all jacked. Private hospital do though, with a plethora of channels to choose from, problem being, once you've been discharged, you'll quickly find yourself being readmitted suffering from extreme shock.. after eyeballing the bill.

Lol at the peasants kicking off about the lack of headphone port. Same *****s probably kicked of when their local supermarket stopped stocking VHS tapes...

Well now see, they're just not as hip and technically advanced as you. So should give them the advantage of the wealth of knowledge you have. Run run along and play with your dongle. (You know the one you'll have to buy to adapt headphones to the jack on the phone. Not that other one ;) ).
