there is one minor entry in the hijackthis log which you should remove. It is not critical:
O23 - Service: perfmons Service (perfmons) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\perfs.exe
otherwise as you are running kaspersky and if this shows no errors I would be content with it.

Thanks for the help and also to all those who one way or the other showed interest in my problem. Unfortunately, it didn't go away; as such i had to take the gruesome task to reformat my hard disk. However i really appreciate your efforts and only hope and pray that it doesn't re-occur. Not conversant with Vista at all; but I believe being part of this family, I will be able to combat future problems, before they become a headache. Once more, thanks for you time. Remain grateful!

No worries - it is a shame tho when you have to do that (if only because we never find out what the problem was!).
