Performing routine maintenance on my PC, I ran scandisk. I got the following message

"The disk check could not be performed because the disk check need exclusive access to some windows files on the disk. These files can be only accessed by restating windows. Do y you want to want to schedule a disk check to occur next time you restart the pc "

Dutifully I restarted the PC. Just before the Logon in screen I got a blue screen in the style you get when you install windows.

It started the scan disk but said something like the cannot gain direct access to the volume. It now does this every time I boot up. Can anyone explain whats going on???

Try running Scandisk in safe mode,or from the recovery console on the XP CD.There mustn`t be any other processes/progs running at the same time.

hmmm ok, Safemode gets stuck on the driver loading the screen.

If you can`t get into safe mode, that`s not good.Have you installed any hardware recently ? Try removing it.
Try the recovery console option or slave the drive to another PC and check it over from there.
