Search redirect virus

By ChasR

  1. I've finally gotten a virus that I can't get rid of. All searches by Google and Bing are being redirected to an advertising site. On occasion IE will open a new window and go to a Google page. I've performed the 8 steps suggested in the sticky including the 3 scans with logs. I couldn't find anything in the logs that alarmed me but that doesn't mean anything.

    System:
    Dell Dimension 8200
    WINXP SP3 with current updates
    AVG Ver 9.0.716
    Internet Explorer Ver 8.0

Have attached the 3 log files as requested.
I thank in advance the brave soul willing to assist me in removing the virus.

    Ran ESET On Line Scanner

It did not find any threats!

    Update of problem

In addition to the search redirect virus I now have a problem with my computer shutting down. When trying to restart my background screen goes away and I get the Windows Shutting Down screen and it stalls at that point. Have to hit the reset button to restart.

Try performing an XP repair or perform a Dell restore on the computer

Have used Combofix before and decided to try it again. Problem seems to be fixed. I believe the virus was embedded in the atapi file.
    Thanks
