I've got AVG free, spybot S&D and Reg Mechanic and you're bog standard Win XP firewall.
Am I adequately protected against hacker cnuts and trojans and viruses, etc?

If you never go on the Internet, yes.
If you are on a dial-up, probably also yes.
If you are on broadband, no.
Switch of the XP-firewall and install one of these free firewalls:
Sygate's personal firewall or Zonelabs ZoneAlarm or Agnitum Outpost.

In AVG, make sure that the Outlook Express 5.5 plugin is activated.

Do not rely solely on Spybot, also install and run Adaware. They complement each other rather well.

Surf to WWW.GRC.COM (Gibson) and run his programs Decombobulator and UnPnP

The best safety precaution is common sense. Do not click on suspicious attachments or links ( even if they come from people you know ) & you should be fine.

Most viruses still need to be "launched" in order to infect a machine.
