sheryl sandberg teens facebook home

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg recently stopped by the D11 conference for a quick chat with hosts Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. While there, Sandberg addressed a recent report from Pew suggesting teenagers are abandoning Facebook in favor of other social networking services like Twitter and Tumblr.

Sandberg said Facebook is the leader in a growing market but did acknowledge that teens are using other services as well. Alternative usage is something she said Facebook was watching very carefully.

The executive also touched on several other topics such as hourly usage, noting that social networking and other Internet activities still pale in comparison to time spent watching television. At present, the average user spends just six hours per week using Facebook but more than 34 hours watching TV. She said there is room for people to do different things and that like all other services, they continue to grow.

Mossberg and Swisher later grilled Sandberg on the topic of Facebook Home and its lackluster reception thus far. She said Facebook was committed to providing monthly updates for the service and described it as the first version of building a phone around a person rather than apps and activities. She said she believed they were on a path to make it better but at the end of the day, you either love it or you don’t – there’s no bimodal.

If you recall, HTC launched the First smartphone pre-loaded with Facebook Home just last month. Thus far, it’s been a total flop as AT&T has decided to discontinue it following a price drop from $99 to just $0.99.

They should just let it die. No one wants Facebook Home. And poor HTC being the Guinea pig and all, it's like they can't never catch a break...
