SLI arrangements with 3 slots

Hi, I have a question about how 2 videocards can be arranged on a motherboard with 3 pci-e 2.0 slots like ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard.

Do the 2 videocards have to arranged in the first and second, or can it be arranged on the first and third or second and third slots?

That mobo manual says, at the end, to use the blue slots 1 and 3 (1 PCIE16 (#2) is white like the PCI slots).

It IMPLIES any slot will do, but says those 2.
