SLOW Win XP home (on laptop)

    okay... my bro brought home his laptop from college cus its going INSANLY SLOW.... im talking 20 minutes just to get past the windows loading screen... once u finally get logged on to the user (another 10 min's)... it takes forever to load simple thigs...i.e. folders, explorer, and so on.... hes got a total of 18GB and has 12GB free.... what can i do to fix this..... and i cant just simply re-install windows because he needs everything thats saved on it.... please help

    Well for starters it would be a good idea to back everything up one way or another, by a netowrk or CDR.

    Next, what are some more specifications of this machine? What was changed recently to make it go slower all the sudden(or has this been going on quite a while?)? Is it up to date with all updates?

    Try running adaware and spybot, in case it is a virus that is slowing it down.

    Try what Poert suggested, as well as running a full AV scan and check the fragmentation of the HDD.

    Full system specs and a list of services may also help determine the problem.
