Just nosing around the web and found this tip. Go to control panel/internet options/connections/lan settings and uncheck automaticaly detect settings.

Seems to speed up the loading time for web pages for me :) Hope it does for you :)
 
That will be very dependant on the type of connection you have.

I use a BT connection and doing what you suggest increased its reliability a little but i have seen no change in connection speed.
I did it about a week ago so i have had time to see if there was any other benefits.
 
It only disables IE's proxy detection. Yes, you gain a couple of seconds when you connect to somewhere in IE for the first time. It makes abolutely no difference once the (attempt at) proxy detection has been carried out and IE knows that there is no proxy to be found.

Of course, if your network actually provides a proxy and that proxy happens to be a slow one, then not detecting and using the thing may give you higher gains.
