smsse.exe error

Hi

All of a sudden whenever Windows XP Pro Starts up I get an error message saying

Window cannot find smsse.exe , please ensure you have types in the correct file name etc etc.

Does anyone know how i can solve this problem , i have tried starting in safe mode , disabiling everything in msconfig startup but to no effect.

Also XP's sytem restore has stopped working, as it wont let me restore to an earlier time

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

The smsse.exe is a virus and needs to be got rid of.

Boot into safe mode and turn off system restore, then run your antivirus programme.

Also go HERE and follow the instructions carefully. Print them out if you can.

Once you have done that go HERE for instructions on how to post your Hijackthis log.

Thanks for the advice and links , ive downloaded and completed everything.

That in itself seems to have solved the problem, so thanks again for the advice.

I have attached the hijackthis log as well , in case you can offer any other advice on items that i may need to fix
