So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

That looks great but...floppy?!:haha:

On topic. How does the PCI version of the 8400gs 512 mb does with 1080p video? I just ordered one of the passive Sparkle ones the other day to go with a mini-ITX motherboard, and will be using it as an HTPC.

The entire system will be:
Commell LV-670 mini-ITX motherboard
Socket 478 Celeron 2.6
Sparkle 8400gs 512 mb
1 gb DDR
80 gb 2.5" HDD

Anyway, goodbye stock made computers.......and PCI video cards forever :)
There is nothing wrong with Stock/prebuilt computers, you just don't have a very powerful one thats all. As for saying goodbye to PCI cards, that i agree with. :)

Well, after cash backs and rebates, these are what I have settled and will start to build my first comp after Christmas :)

- Cooler Master Elite 335 case
- Intel i7 860 with stock fan
- Gigabyte ga-p55A-ud4p mobo
- Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 2000MHz CL9 HyperX ram
- XFX Radeon 5770
- Corsair 750HX power supply
- WD Black 1TB 7200 36MB
- LG 8X blu-ray rewritter
- LG 22x DVD+R rewritter
- floppy
- existing XP Pro SP3

what I need next:

Window 7 Ultimate 64bits...to run more than 4GB ram!

Looks good i believe, but no need for a floppy drive. As for the OS, WIN 7 32Bit for that system seems to be just fine.

nah. P55 chipset needs at least 64bit OS to pump up the system :) ....if you want to add more than 4gb of ram.

btw, i just changed my mind....no floppy...and i will get a Antec Three Hundred case instead :)

yea i plan to go with 64bit when i get my secondary rig myself and get up to 8 or 12GB LOL, just to do it.
anyways, enjoy your new system once you build it.
pcie is amazing tho, no more problems with gaming, trust me.

It will do BluRay just fine. If you use a CUDA decoder, then it will do just about everything else, too.

hey i need help im looking at a pci card named EVGA GeForce 6200 Video Card - 256MB DDR2. i realize it has DDR2 memory and the one in my system is DDR will it work?

There is no connection between the memory type in your system and the memory type used by the video card. You can run a GDDR3 video card on a system using SDRAM for its main memory.

In short, it will work.

It is a horrible card, though.

no floppy :)

Guess what, I saw Amazon had the Geforce 5500 at $29 (after rebate) and got it for my old Dell 2400. Boyz the COD II plays flawlessly and freaking 30 FPS in average!!!!!! Now I have two nice computers and the Dell runs all the programs that Windows7 doesn't.

Now I have the conclusion: I have tried all these fancy, ultra PCI cards (x1550, H4350, 9400, 9500) for the Dell and none of them work in gaimg (X1550 can pump a little up to 12FPS) except this old Geforce 5500 (that's why PNY still making them).

The bottleneck theory is correct! Don't waste your $ to get anything over 256mb and not in DDR SDRAM. Not sure about the other brands but not on this DELL 2400.

Very nice! I bet that machine screams. Is that CPU cooler the same as the H50?

I got the parts for my HTPC. The 8400gs seems great so far, especially since it is passive. I don't have windows installed as of yet though, since I am building the case from scratch. This thing is pretty small, considering I am using a full ATX PSU, and a dedicated GPU- It's 8" deep, 6" high, and 11" wide. I'll be sure to post some GPU benchmarks once it is completely up and running.

Yes this is the H50. Very stable device and small. My i7 keeps running at 39-40c.

I like passive heat sink. Less energy used. Less noise.

Yea my wallet was screaming loud also!

I consider this is a good, non-extreme gamer gaming rig. Need to jump up to 1366 platform for the extreme!

Yes OC by Gigabyte. It comes with a cool software EasyTune6 and gives you three overclock levels to pick. Of course, you can go to BIOS and do your own twist (@ your own risks) also!

here is the machine:
P1120012.JPG

now I can play the COD Modern Warfare 2 in between 100-200 FPS in 1920 x 1080 setting :)

Thanks for the note.

This is my very first modern computer. I was an old schooler until last Oct. I had been using my old Dell Dimension XPS R400 since 1998! And of course that little sweet thing had been upgraded many times. It had a Powerleap 1.4 GHz CPU with Win 2000. However, it dropped dead for no reason in Oct! Then I found a near new Dell 2400 in my office storage and upgraded it to 3.06 GHz with 2GB RAM but with no luck in finding a compatible video card for it :(

I think this new box will keep me happy for a while........in terms of gaming. The only shitty thing is that Win7 doesn't run many old programs like scanner nor printer nor other older software.

Boyz the COD Modern Warfare 2 is so super cool. Graphic detail is amazing.

but I still want to re-play the COD 2 in my Dell 2400 with Gefore 5500 PCI! (Win7 won't take the COD2!)

very easy. Make sure you don't rush yourself. Most of the manuals / illustrations are very easy to understand. If you don't understand, do a Google or YouTube searches. Many manufacturers have uploaded the installation instructions on Youtube.

Only mobo manual is a bit more to read. But they are fun.

performance wise?

lets say my Dell 2400 with Gefore 5500 PCI runs COD2 around 20-30+ FPS, my new box runs COD Modern Warfare 2 around 100 - 200+ FPS......

silly thing is that those 1GB PCI cards run around $80 to $90 bucks, and the not-yet-high-end cards (like HD5770, 5750 or 4650) run like $170 to under $100. So if you have a PCI16 slot and a decent CPU and RAM, get those!

Vista or 7 x64 "Period" (Aand Why)

ok, my Dell 2400 now is using the onboard card and surprisingly it plays DVD and HD movies downloaded from YouTube very well. Remember, downloaded YouTube HD movies looked like god damn slow motion or slide show with all these fancy $100 PCI cards! Anyway, goodbye stock made computers.......and PCI video cards forever :)

what I need next:

Window 7 Ultimate 64bits...to run more than 4GB ram!

sage to be continued....

I wouuld have gone with 7 Ultimate x64 regardless regardless.

I built this current setup (Celeron DC E1200, ASUS P5N-EM HDMI, HIS HD3450 PCIe graphics, 3 GB DDR2) and, except for some benchmarking, I have refused to run a 32-bit operating system on it except in a VM. And that is despite starting with 2 GB at build time, and having only 3 GB now.

The why is surprising to some - stability when multitasking.

I do game; however, I tend to prefer RTS games as opposed to shooters. SupCom and C&C 3, RA3, or the beta version of C&C 4 (which I am in) notwithstanding, RTS games usually have LOWER graphical requirements than shooters. Though I primarily sandbox (as opposed to playing online), like any online gamer, I tend to have multiple applications (x64-friendly if not x64 themselves) running in the background. Surprisingly, those that play shooters online run more (not fewer) applications online than the strategy gamer (Team Fortress and TF2 especially; however, the same can be said for ETQW or ETCW as well). With that being the case, why would you NOT want the additional isolation hat the WOW64 thunk layer brings to a game, especially if the penalty it brings is either minimal or none? (In most cases, there is NO performance penalty in running a x32 game in an x64 version of Windows, despite WOW64.)
