Some DirectX 12 features will require next-gen graphics hardware

I suppose you are right. MS will find a way to keep DX12 from working with old cards that will support some of the new features, through planned obsolescence. But then explain how Mantle is better in this aspect. Doesn't Mantle require GCN compatibility? That's not a very old standard if so.

All I am saying is mantle is like the new kid on the block bringing new exciting features which will make games run better which in turn allows for tons more stuff to happen onscreen and then we have the old timers playing copycatchup Plus we kinda need something thats developed from a company that knows how graphics cards work like AMD/Nvidia ....

I have just had a look at games that support DX11 and in all but three cases older versions of DX are also supported for games. I suspect the same will be true for the small number of games which will be DX 12 titles. It will be years before new games take advantage of DX12 and most will also support DX11, 10 and 9.

Of course if MS restrict DX12 to W8 the game developers are more likely to delay adoption of DX12 as the market is too small.

That is the downside that I hope will push for them to support DX12 in Win7. Does MS want DX12 out now, or are they comfortable enough to wait till the next OS release?

As much as I would like to see DX12 in Win7, my bet is they will wait it out. They will use DX12 as a selling point for their next OS. That's what they did with Win7 and DX11.

Delay it like they did like other DX's.

But W7 is outselling W8 for the self build PC market. Just the sort of people who would want DX12!

I agree! But sadly, I don't think MS cares. Win7 has yet to see a DX update since launch. DX11.1 and DX11.2 has been designated Win8/Win8.1 versions only. There seems to be a destinct pattern between DX versions and OS releases from MS.

It is all a bit academic anyway as DX12 is not due out till 2015. Without doubt it will come with W9 which we all know will be the bees knees (could be touch and go). :S

If old versions of windows are any indication it will take 5yrs or so for games to actually come out utilizing features that are in dx12 unlike games that just add it in and saw "Our game is developed with DX12 but we dont use anything new in DX12 so hey just use DX9 like we have for the past 10yrs"

By which time we will be complaining about W10 :(

I don't think this surprises anyone. You've always needed a graphics card with the instruction set build onto the chip in order to run them. I was thinking about picking up another GTX 680, but I'll just save the money until DX12 hardware comes out.
I dont think that will be out till 2015. I doubt nVidia and AMD will implement DX12 into the next gen 22nm GPUs since DX12 is targeted at holiday 2015 games (late 2015). What was the trend with DX11 GPUs? It should follow the same one.

Lets hope Battlefield 5 implements DX12 since it is during the timeframe of the DX12 release.

I think they'll come out with the DX12 hardware next gen. The resell value on their old hardware will drop considerably and people like me will just not buy the DX11 hardware. Seriously, one GTX 680 should be enough for everyone. My 680 will easily last me another year or two. Only reason I'm not buying a cheap used one is that my money is better saved for next gen than spent on current gen. If I'm going to buy high end graphics hardware I want all the high end graphics features.

Are you Kidding me this is how Microsoft will get you upgrade to windows 8
yes it will support windows 7 but do more for windows 8-9 and then you will have to buy a new graphics card to fully support directx 12 which in there minds help on the pc slump.

Amd said that all GCN cards support dx12. any more details on this?
As far as I know, all GCN-based AMD cards will support whatever can be supported on DX11 hardware. As the article states, other features will require DX12 hardware.

Or maybe, just maybe, xbox one has hardware support. they have been working on directx12 for 4 years after all

Thats extremely unlikely!
More than unlikely I would say. Let's not forget that AMD designed the graphics rendering hardware of the xbone and I'm pretty sure that if they were building DX12 specced hardware they would know about it and probably also implemented it within the R9 gpu's?

What part of older DX11 GPU's will support DX12 did you not understand? LOL, Jesus people!
