Sony to start producing PS4 this year, say Taiwan manufacturers

I fail to see how i'm gunna even come close to parting with hundreds of pounds for a PS4. My PS3 does everything i need it for; I've not once begged for a better framerate or better graphics with it (but then maybe i'm not 'hardcore'). The blu ray drive potential hasn't even been fully tested yet with a good bunch of games.

Too soon for me.

To me it still feels too soon. I was pumped for the PS3's release. I was excited.
I hear news of the PS4 and I'm like "Meh".
So maybe its too soon, maybe its all the bad press Sony has been getting or all their screw ups.
I really don't think the PS4 is going to sell 1/2 as good as the PS3 did.

TorturedChaos,

Or maybe the other reason you aren't as excited is because when PS3 was released, Sony touted 2Tflops of performance (which at the time blew away GPUs out of the water). Do you remember the Killzone demo that they showed or the Gran Turismo demo? Killzone looked nothing like that demo and GT was delayed for like 5 years!

Perhaps you are now much more skeptical of the fact that a $500+ PS4 will blow away your mind in terms of graphics. What about gameplay? With constant call of duty titles coming it, there isn't THAT much to get excited imo. Once PS3 falls to $99, I'll probably pick it up to play key 3rd person games like Metal Gear Solid, Infamous and Uncharted. Until then, I am going to game on the PC and wait until PS4/Xbox720 fall in price from their likely $500+ prices and they actually have a reasonable library of games. Still, paying $40-60 for console games is simply too expensive. Hence my reasoning for picking up a PS3 ONLY to play its exclusives. I see no point in buying games like Metro 2033, Dirt 2/3, F1 2010, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Battlefield BF2/BF3, Fable, Batman Arkham Asylum/Arkham City/ GTAIV, etc. on the consoles when they are much better on the PC in the first place.

In conclusion: Imho, the best thing about consoles are their exclusives. These exclusives can be purchased along with the console for very cheap at the end of the console's life. Therefore, it makes little sense to get excited about a new console at the beginning of its life-cycle.

wow, that's exactly what I want to do! I'm going to buy an outdated system to play 4-5 exclusive titles that are 7 years old. I'm cool picking up n46 games for $1 each for the time being. I'll wait till I can get a PS3 for $10 at a yard sale with 10 free games.

Do you know what makes little sense? buying outdated technology to play outdated games that a company was too greedy to release on all platforms. The best thing about consoles are their exclusives LOLOLOLOL. You must be one of the dumbest consumers I've ever met. Enjoy the bad business model.

You do realize that he was saying that, for all the super awesome graphics and mind blowing top of the line stuff, he was going to PLAY ON PC? He's saying that yeah, consoles have some pretty nifty exclusives, but for everything else the PC does it better. So to him, why would he spend $400 to play 3 games, when he could buy Steam games for like $10?

You realize that I just went through playing Majora's Mask AGAIN like last week right? Why? Cuz it's a friggin awesome game! If I want graphics I'll pull up Battlefield BC2 on my PC and enjoy real 1080p graphics.

I hope there will come a day when one could launch a PC game without having to install most of it's files and dependencies on disk, say a super light background install (new DirectX etc. if required) and game launches seamlessly as if it were a console, but also have advanced install options for those that require. Perhaps a change in storage media is needed, sell them on Nand flash etc.

To soon? This is the longest console gap in recent history. This list does not show many other consoles released such as the neo geo. Since 2006 we have had nothing.

Unlikely that Sony would be releasing the PS4 next year as some kind of knee jerk reaction the new Wii; especially given their current focus to go after Nintendo in the portable space with the Vita. Also, it's doubtful that Sony would acknowledge such plans even if they existed since this could only tend to undermine PS3 sales in the coming holiday season.

Believe the PS4 will merely be the evolution and refinement of the PS3 with a few new features. Perhaps another die shrink to further reduce manufacturing costs and better graphics. Above all else, critical that Sony retain backwards compatibility with the PS3 and stick with an architecture generally consistent with the current unit ... really don't think the development community would respond well to a radical redesign of the PlayStation.

I'm still content with my PS3 and would see no reason to put a PS4 on my shopping list anytime soon.

Yeah, you would think that would be a big boob if backwards compatibility was missing.

Yep, might be tough to convince folks that they need three consoles to play each generation of games. Fortunately, I have the original PS3 with the Emotion Engine and full hardware emulation so it's not an issue

I envy you :(

I didn't think before i bought and ended up with the 40 gig version (otherwise known as the crap version)...Not having the PS2 ability does hurt, but then the machine still does so much for me not to be unhappy with it.

Being fairly new to the whole Sony Playstation landscape, I feel as other have already stated, that it's a bit early to bust open the wallets and purses and start forking money over for a Playstation 4.

Even if Sony was to release the Playstation 4, say next year or the year after, I probably won't be standing in line overnight at a Walmart to get one. I currently own a very nice older Playstation 2 system, and I'm very much in love with it. My plan was not to be a "hold out" for some prediction as to when the Playstation 4 would be coming out to buy one. My plan was to use this older Playstation 2 as a "filler" in between not owning a console to owning a Playstation 3, my Playstation 2 would appear to be to some as a life boat, bidding my time until a Playstation 3 lands in my living room.

I will be purchasing a Playstation 3 within a year after my move (which by the way I'm approved, my move starts on October 20 2011, to be in by November 1 2011.) after that move and I save up my money again, I will be going to Gamestop and purchasing their pre-owned Playstation 3 "Supercharged" version, with backwards compatibility.

This will be my next system...

So Sony can release the Playstation 4 anytime they want, I'm not going to bite. I want to allow myself proper time to get to know my soon to be Playstation 3 system, really have fun with it, not at all being concerned that it will then be starting it's plunge as the Playstation 2 system did by going "obsolete"! I figure if I'm this in love my an older Playstation 2 system and am in no rush to get anything else, I more than likely will feel the same about a Playstation 3 system.

And as I close, one of my new quotes...."PS2 Fatboy Fanboy For Life"! :)

Guest, post #39, you are so wrong! Why don't you come to my place and tell that to my PS2 system, as much as I've spoiled it, by buying approx. 90% to 95% of all the peripherals that were available at the time and buying little over 200 games for it, my system knows it's alive and thinks it's the bomb!
