sony xperia z3 compact review smaller sony smartphone xperia z3 compact

Like what the Xperia Z3 brings to the table but wished it was a little bit smaller? Then Sony has you covered. The Xperia Z3 Compact features a smaller 4.6-inch display and all the same goodness of its larger sibling in a more manageable body; great news for those who dislike the recent trend of massive flagships.

Hardware includes a powerful Snapdragon 801 SoC, a 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS camera, fast connectivity features including Category 4 LTE and NFC, and IP68 waterproofing. With this kind of specs the Compact occupies an interesting position in the market with little, if any competition. In the Apple camp the new iPhone 6 is a similar size and packs top-end hardware, but if you’re specifically after a small Android flagship your options are limited.

While there might be not much competition for the Xperia Z3 Compact, there are no winners by default. Sony does have a good history with producing these smaller-sized devices – I really liked the Xperia Z1 Compact when I reviewed it earlier this year – so how have they managed to improve?

Hopefully the camera restrictions will disappear with Android L update as an API for RAW support will be available. There are some apps already out to take advantage of raw capture, which should be great with the 20MP sensor in this camera and it's big brother.
