I believe my on board sound card is fried. Its a via on board. Recently I heard crackling in my right speaker. Now, I have no sound in it. I switched speakers and it still does. Also, I have a headphone hook up in the front, when headphones are hooked up, the sound is distant and has no bass..is this a sound card dying on me?

Also, if it is, I am wiling to buy a new one. Yet, I could probably spend no more than 50 dollars, any recommendation for a good sound card?

Try reinstalling the drivers for it off of VIA's driver website, VIA Arena. Make sure the balance and bass/treble controls are at the default in the Windows sound control panel.

If you feel the need to buy a new sound card altogether, I would recommend the SoundBlaster Audigy. It's only $51 at Newegg. The Fortissimo III is also at Newegg and sells for $45 but it does not have EAX Advanced HD and it may be a tad slower than the Audigy in games.
