Sound is jammed..help!

Everytime I boot up on my old pc, the first sound jams and continues to play, like a machine gun. I uninstalled the sound card and even put a completely different one in but it still does it. Whats wrong? I have to keep the volume off.

sounds like a problem with your operating system. what OS and service pack are you running?

I am running Windows 2000 Pro. I thought it may be the OS too, so I reinstalled Windows. No change. It still hangs up. I have to keep it muted. ?????
