If your computer takes what seems like forever to start up, try this.
Open up your hard drive that windows is installed on, open up the windows folder. Find the folder called "Prefetch", open it up, and delete everything inside, and restart. I tried it with two of my computers:
Dell inspiron 3500, 333mhz p2, 256mb 66mhz pc-133 ram, 4gb Fujitsu HD, neomagic magic graph 256v 2.5mb vid card windows xp pro sp2.
before clean up, 2 mins 26 seconds to start up
after clean up, 38 seconds.
ECS elitegroup RS428-M754, AMD athlon 3200+ 2.2ghz 754, 512mb ddr-333, 80gb WDC, Nvidia 8600gt 512mb, windows xp pro sp2.
before clean up, 27 seconds
after clean up, 8 seconds.
dramatically inproved start up time, especially on the laptop.
I time it from the xp start up screen until the log on screen is completely loaded.
