spyware and viruses deleted or disabled my winXP home ed. firewall

i downloaded a program that messed up my computer severely. my firewall was turned off and destroyed or something. the dialog box says 'windows firewall cannot be enabled because of an unexpected error' or something very close to that. if anyone can help it would be great

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools then System Restore and restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems.

I had the same problem when a program pretending to be windows update and an antispyware program(spyware sherrif) installed a large amount of viruses and killed the firewall.

System restore fixed it

the restore point does not go back that far. is there anything else i can do?

If you suspect a virus/spyware problem, go HERE and follow the instructions exactly.

Post a fresh HJT log into this thread, only after doing the above.
