Start items get disabled automatically

i have windows vista
ok ive got tihs problem only with 2 programs.the windows sidebar and windows live messenger.i restarted my computer a few days back and they didnt start up automatically.so i went to msconfig and they werent listed in the startup items.so i opened the programs and enabled startup from their respective options menus.but when i restart my computer they still dont start up and when i check msconfig,they're not there
