Start Menu Problem

I'm trying to help out a associate with a problem on the start menu of Windows XP Home. When you left click anything on the right side of the start menu such as "My Documents" or "My Computer" the screen clears except for the wall paper and after 10 - 15 seconds restores the desktop. Nothing else happens and will not open the requested item. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer and then click SYSTEM (on the left hand side of the Event Viewer). Post any Explorer errors or system errors.
