I'm using Windows XP. Recently when dealing with a virus on my computer I foolishly ended up deleting smss.exe As I understand it that file is needed to start windows, which is why my computer now won't go past the part where you select a user. I have access to another identical computer that I could get the smss.exe file from but I don't know exactly what I should do or how to do it. Help?

You need to perform what is referred to as a "repair install" to get the computer to boot again. The easiest way to do this is using a windows xp oem cdrom so that the needed files can be recopied to the hard drive. If you need a walkthrough procedure, go here. It's not that difficult of a process, and it's a lot easier than most alternatives that involve manually copying from other types of bootable media.

try going into safe mode and doing a system recovery, or if you have a system recovery disk that will work also.
