Yet another company is jumping into the virtual reality headset scene. Starbreeze Studios, the game developer behind Payday 2, Syndicate and The Chronicles of Riddick, has acquired hardware startup InfinitEye and is developing a prototype VR headset that’s apparently aimed at the highest end of PC enthusiasts with specs to match. The company is calling it StarVR.

The device packs two 5.5-inch Quad HD (2560x1440) displays to achieve a super-wide 210-degree field of view -- more than double the 100 degrees offered by the Oculus Rift -- and an impressive 130 degrees vertical field of view to match. It will operate at a 90Hz refresh rate and feature a fresnel lens design, motion tracking as well as a combination of gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers to give players an immersive VR experience.

The new headset runs on Starbeerze’s proprietary Valhalla engine and will support the Steam OpenVR framework. Those attending this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles can catch a demo showcasing Overkill Software's upcoming shooter adaptation of The Walking Dead.

A handful of game journalists were treated to an exclusive early look last week and their impressions are mixed. While spec-wise the StarVR is certainly impressive, the prototype unit showed some calibration issues, ghosting, blurring, somewhat rough textures and is too heavy to be strapped to the head for hours. Clearly Starbreeze has a long way to go before it can compete with juggernauts like Valve/HTC’s Vive and the Oculus Rift.

Couldn't care less for the product itself, only the fact that the competition is rising, which is great, so we are likely to see quality VR-s sooner rather than later.
