Strange Boot Problem

Hi, im having a problem booting my PC with XP SP2 (boring....). The BIOS load fine but then the screen just goes black with the flashing horizontal curser in the top left and stays that way. The thing is i can load XP fine if i press F12 at boot and manually select the appropriate drive.

Any suggestions as to how i can get my comp to automatically load XP again?

Is the IDE drive on the Blue connector 80 wire cable: for what it is worth, on many Asus boards the Sata 3 or 4 are used for sata slave.
