Strange closing of windows related to control panels and MMC

I've started working on a different computer at work and it behaves very strangely.

When i have some control panels, such as system, regional settings, and management console open, they randomly close themselves with no input from me. This also happens with the TaskManager and sysinternal's Process Explorer.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

It might be some kind of adware. Do you notice any balloons or popups telling you that you have a virus or spyware?

Nope, no ads. Only thing that happens is that those windows will randomly close.

In a possibly related note, one of my usb devices no longer works either, a Prolific PL-2303 USB to serial port.

Is it possible that your network priveleges are preventing you from running some applications? Also, if you have some kind of anti-virus program running you could look through the settings to see if there is something in there that is closing these things to "prevent harm to your data".

This new machine might not have the drivers for this device. Try going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the drivers

Actually the port has been working fine for the last 2 weeks that i've been using this computer, but yesterday it just stopped working.

yes, i've tried it in all the ports, and i've confirmed it works on the other computers.

As I suspected, your system is infected with malware.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as attachments into this thread, only after doing the above.

Also, let me know the results of the AVG Antirootkit scan.
