Suping up my Presario

I have this Compaq Presario that's fairly new. I don't spend much time playing games on it but I do like to a couple of times a week. So I want to set it up so it will have no problems running any game.
I'm not looking for super performance. I just want it to be able to run any given game without lagging or freezing up. Currently I can't seem to run demanding games like Painkiller or Doom3.
I installed a BMG nVidia GeForce FX 5500 oc to take care of that pathetic onboard vid.
I haven't made any other changes but here are the rest of the specs:
Celeron 351 (P) 3.2 GHz
Socket 775
Asus P5RC-LA
512mb 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

Would beefing up the ram do the trick alone?
I want to keep the price to a minimum since I don't play much and again, I'm not looking to make a super machine out of it. Just something I can get by with.
Links to any suggested parts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
