SvcHost Error during windows updates

Hi gang!

I had to restore an image from Aug 3 due to other factors.

When I try to get my windows updates for Aug & Sept I gat this error instantly.

Svc Host has to close

Here are the two files related to the error:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5d67.dir00\Svchost.exe

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5d67.dir00\appcompat.txt

Now I'm panicing because I'm not patched.

Does anyone know how I could fix this? I would be so greatful!

I`m a little suspicious, because as far as I`m aware svchost.exe shouldn`t run from that location.

Go and read this thread HERE and post a HJT log as an attachment.

Hi Howard,

I found the problem. After I restored the image I got click happy and cleared out some files with CCleaner (System Temp). Boo, boo! The appcompat.txt needs to be in that location so windows will update. How svchost is related to this I don't know. Maybe svchost needs to talk to that file.

I tested this by restoring the image again, and leaving CCleaner alone. And low and behold, I was able to get my windows updates.

But here is a HijackThis log anyway just to make sure. Thank you very much.
