svchost problems

I am having ongoing problems with "svchost" throwing up error messages.
I cannot relate the appearance of these messages with any particular application - it seems to be running something in the background rather.
Have posted a "HIJACKTHIS" log (on the correct forum) but also checked the event viewer to see if there is an indication of where the problem lies......
In order from most recent, down to start-up this morning:

1. Fault bucket 196730242.

2. Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780.

3. Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780.

4. Faulting application , version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

5. Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780.

6. Faulting application svchost.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

7. Faulting application , version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

Once the message "Generic Host Services for Win32 has been terminated" comes up, all applications will then only run in "safe mode", with limited functionality.

Any ideas on what's causing the problem?

It is a problem of the service Automatic Updates. Yesterday I fixed a computer with the same problem. Somewhere on the forum there is a tread with the same problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

Have disabled the Automatic Updates, and re-enabled some of the processes (in Admin Tools / Services) which 'svchost' was obviously trying to access .... and after rebooting, so far I haven't had a repeat error message.
Brilliant!

Thanks guys, and keep up the good work!
