I am not very knowledgeable about laptops, but my mother, a computer neophyte, recently obtained one manufactured around 2000.

There is one PCMCIA port. It might be advantageous to interchange cards in the port -- a USB card to connect with several peripherals, and a wireless network card for roaming.

I realize that it's most likely necessary to shut the unit off to interchange the cards. What I'm wondering is, would doing this swapping at all 'confuse' the machine.

Thanks for your help. I live distant and can't be there to experiment.

You don't even have to shut down - PCMCIA devices can be hot-swapped with no problem. You just tell Windows to "stop" the device and then you can remove it.
